Your First Step to Mentoring: What to expect at a mentor info session

Updated: Apr 2

A mentor information session is a chance to see the heart of what we do, hear powerful stories, and imagine the incredible difference you could make in a young person’s life.

Book yours here:

A mentee at a mentor event with Pillars Ka Pou Whakahou.

Attending a mentor information session is all about connection, inspiration and discovery.

Hosted monthly, they’re designed to give you everything you need to know about mentoring with Pillars Ka Pou Whakahou. Plus, they’re a chance to meet our Mentoring Coordinators—your guides throughout this incredible journey.

Here’s what you can expect:

  1. Discover the Power of Whānaungatanga (Connection)

Becoming a mentor isn’t just about changing a tamariki's life—it’s also about joining a wider community dedicated to creating positive futures for tamariki and rangatahi.

At the session, we’ll take time to get to know you and hear about what inspired you to explore mentoring.

  2. Learn About Our Kaupapa and Mahi

You’ll gain a deeper understanding of our mission, our mahi (work), and why breaking the cycle of intergenerational offending is so important.

From our wraparound support to the mentoring programme, we’ll share how we walk alongside tamariki and whānau as they create positive futures for themselves —and how mentors like you fit into that journey.

  3. Explore the Mentor Journey

What does mentoring really look like?

    Journey to mentoring

Our Mentoring Coordinators will walk you through the step-by-step process of becoming a mentor, from attending an info session to being matched with a tamariki. This is your chance to ask questions and clarify what’s involved.

  4. Be Inspired by Mentor Stories

Real-life mentor stories will show you just how impactful this role can be. You'll hear stories like:

“I love it … every single time I rock up, there are smiles. I walk in and I feel like my perspective on nearly everything has changed … in an actual, real way… I feel so appreciated. I get there, and her Mum is always so keen for her (my mentee) to come and hang out with me.”

From the bonds they’ve formed to the moments of growth they’ve witnessed, these stories will give you a glimpse of the joy and fun mentoring brings.

  1. Find Out What's Next

If you’re ready to take the next step, we’ll explain the application process and the ongoing support you’ll receive as a mentor.

You’ll also learn about our training, resources, and the community of amazing mentors that you'll be a part of!
