Mentoring Matters: Why Become a Mentor

Writer: Pillars Ka Pou Whakahou Pillars Ka Pou Whakahou

"The bond we have formed with our mentees—this is for life. They are our family for life."

Mentor and mentee spend time together at the library.

There are a million reasons to become a mentor at Pillars Ka Pou Whakahou. Research shows that having a mentor helps tamariki and rangatahi develop positive attitudes toward school, build stronger interpersonal relationships, and experience greater well-being. Mentoring also fosters community involvement and encourages a healthy, active lifestyle.

But beyond the statistics, what truly makes mentoring special is its impact on both the mentor and the mentee.

The relationships built, the lessons shared, and the small yet powerful moments of connection create a lasting ripple effect. Many of our mentors describe their experience as deeply fulfilling—not just because they see their mentee grow, but because they feel a sense of community, appreciation, and purpose.

So, what inspires people to become a mentor in the first place?

We asked our mentors to share their reasons for becoming a mentor:

Mentor and mentee spend time together.

"If I can, I like to help, and this looked like a really good opportunity to try and contribute in my own little way. "

"I thought it would be a cool way to connect with young people and a way to give back to the community. "

"I wanted to give back to others because I've been supported through tough times."

What motivates them to continue mentoring?

"I feel I’m making a difference in my mentee's life."

"Seeing her grow each year and become a lovely young girl"

"I know I can share my life experience and it be valuable."

"The enjoyment I get from spending time with the young people, and the supportive environment created by other mentors and the Pillars staff."

Mentoring is more than just a commitment—it’s a journey of connection, growth, and shared experiences. Whether it’s seeing a mentee gain confidence, witnessing their achievements, or simply knowing that your presence in their life matters, the rewards of mentoring are immeasurable. And it simply starts with showing up, being there and being a friend.

Could one of these be your reason to become a mentor?
