"I think it has been one of the best days of my life!”

“I'm so glad I didn't give up!”

“Roasting marshmallows on a mountain was awesome.”

“I’ve never done anything like this in my life.”

“Pillars is for kids who have a parent in prison; that’s why we are all here.”

Pillars Ka Pou Whakahou Ski Trip with Ride Tamariki

When we heard about Ride Tamariki’s mission—ensuring every child in Aotearoa has access to the mountains regardless of their circumstances—it immediately resonated with our core values at Pillars Ka Pou Whakahou. We knew this would be an incredible opportunity for the tamariki and rangatahi to explore, bond and grow on a once-in-a-lifetime ski weekend with Cardrona Alpine Resort.

It turned out to be a weekend none of us will ever forget.

First Moments on the Snow

On reaching Cardrona, we were warmly welcomed by the incredible Ride Tamariki team.

For many tamariki, seeing snow for the first time was magical.

Laughter echoed across the slopes as they experienced the thrill of skiing, snowboarding and even a bit of tobogganing. The entire group's warmth, encouragement and enthusiasm brought everyone closer together.

Olympic Confidence on the Slopes

Thanks to the guidance of our dedicated instructors, tamariki tackled the mountain with courage and excitement, transforming from tentative beginners into confident skiers.

They also had the extraordinary chance to meet Olympic-level athletes, who took time to ski with them, share stories and inspire them to dream big.

As one of our rangatahi said, “I got to race against a pro—I think I almost beat him!”

After a day of adventures, the kids gathered for hot dinners, roasting marshmallows and relaxing with movies.

A Reflection on Whānaungatanga

On our last morning, we woke to fresh snow covering the mountains, a perfect send-off as we packed up and said heartfelt farewells to the Ride Tamariki team. We presented them with a taonga, symbolizing the deep bond formed over the weekend and our immense gratitude for this transformative experience.

Reflecting on this trip, one thing stands out: whānaungatanga, the deep connection and kinship that formed among the tamariki, rangatahi and staff.

The confidence and friendships that blossomed on the mountain will stay with them far beyond the slopes.

We’re incredibly grateful to Ride Tamariki, Cardrona staff, and the Wanaka community for making this journey possible. It was more than just a ski trip—it was a step towards growth, resilience and unity for every child involved.

Thank you, Ride Tamariki, for an experience that will be cherished for years.
